“Forests for the Air” Project: To Conserve and Nurture Forests for a Bright Future

Where is the Project Site?

The Cardamom region in the southwestern part of Cambodia is a wilderness paradise and one of the last remaining old-growth forests in Southeast Asia. The region has the country’s heaviest rainfall, and the waters that flow through here don’t just provide drinking water but also support a livelihood for tens of thousands of people in the form of farming, fishing, and hydroelectric power. The products of the forest also constitute an integral part of the lives of those who live here. But over the years, the forests have been depleted by illegal logging and the clearing of land for farming. Wildlife poaching is also a serious problem.

What’s the Project About?

Under the project, CI (Conservation International), the government, and indigenous people are working together to protect the Central Cardamom Protected Forest and its environs in the heart of the Cardamom region. The project will support the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Cambodia to more effectively crack down on illegal activities in the region, improve people’s lives by diversifying means of livelihood, and establish an endowment to ensure that project activities are sustainable.

Local Wildlife: Asian Elephant Elephas maximus

This endangered species lives mainly in the forests of Asia. Their numbers are dwindling as their habitat is encroached upon and poachers hunt them for their ivory tusks.

Daikin Group companies in the ASEAN and Oceania region take environmental conservation very seriously. Besides environmental activities through our air conditioner manufacturing and sales business, our employees have also worked as volunteers in, for example, planting mangrove trees and picking up litter. The Central Cardamom Protected Forest, the site of Daikin’s “Forests for the Air” project, is one of the largest protected forest areas in Asia and one of the world’s most valuable nature preserves. We want to continue our support in unison with Daikin Industries in Japan in order to make the most of this opportunity to further raise the consciousness of environmental protection among Daikin Group employees in ASEAN and Oceania. In Thailand as well we are getting help from interested citizens in planting trees and other volunteer activities in our efforts to bring the volunteer experience to more and more people.

CI was instrumental in the establishment of the CCPF with the Cambodian government, and as such remains wholly committed to its conservation. Working in such a remote region of course has it challenges, but we believe that the ecological riches it holds make it worthwhile. We’ve managed to establish good relationships with the communities living in the forest, and they’ve become important collaborators in protecting the forest and the amazing species it supports. We’re proud of our achievements in the CCPF and are very grateful for Daikin's support to continue working in this incredible part of Cambodia.
