in Japan3: Super Unit: Hydraulic Unit Achieves Energy Efficiency for General Industrial Machines

Not only is Daikin working to reduce air-conditioner electricity consumption; it is coming up with new methods of energy efficiency by discovering how energy has been wasted at factories.

One of these methods involves improving the energy efficiency of hydraulic units that are part of various general industrial equipment. For example, in hydraulic units for presses, most electricity is needed at the time when the machine is actually pressing; after that it is not pressing but merely holding the item in place. In conventional hydraulic units, even after pressing, the motor continued running at the same RPM as when pressing, even though the press was merely holding the item (pressure maintenance). The extra oil sent from the pump passing through the release valve back to the tank was a waste of energy. The hydraulic unit was also not needed at other times, such as while waiting for items to be processed or while preparing for production.

Daikin improved the IPM motor and inverter drive system used in energy-efficient air-conditioners so they could be used for hydraulic applications, and these, along with the combination control tandem pump, were used to create the Super Unit. This unit automatically controls the pump depending on the load pressure during operation, standby, and pressure maintenance. For example, during pressure maintenance, the motor runs at minimum power to operate only the small pump. As well, the Super Unit has advanced performance features such as multi-level pressure, flow volume control, and shockless control that simplify the hydraulic circuits.

Besides being used in general industrial machines, the Super Unit has been adapted to injection molding applications and is used by manufacturers around Japan and in other countries.

Successful Development of High-Precision,Energy-efficient Hydraulic Unit

Our aim was to develop a hydraulic unit that was energy efficient under an variety of conditions of use and that offered advanced functions unlike those of conventional units.

Customers are happy with the energy savings provided by the inverter method as well as the low noise and low oil temperature.

For injection molding applications,which require high-precision control,in addition to the above-mentioned benefits, we improved ease-of-control (repeatability and reproducibility) in the low-speed range, something that was a problem with conventional units. Customers are pleased with how, even when injecting the plastic into the molds at low speed, all molded products come out with identical quality
