Sanae Takaichi, Senior Vice Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (left), with Daikin President Yukiyoshi Okano
We are now in the first year of the commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, under which Japan must cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 6% against fiscal 1990. One of the greatest hopes for achieving this is the recovery and management of fluorocarbons, which have a global warming potential from several hundred to several thousand times that of CO2. Daikin Industries created a network for the unified management of information on fluorocarbon recovery and destruction.
The company also recovers all fluorocarbons across the entire group and manages it all the way through to final destruction or disposal. For these efforts, Daikin received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Prize at 11th Ozone Layer Protection and Global Warming Prevention Awards.
The award is in recognition of Daikin’s creation and operation of a unified management system that ensures strict compliance with laws and regulations at all of the company’s sites in Japan, as well as a service department that directly recovers fluorocarbons. It also recognizes the entire Daikin Group’s efforts at all stages of the air conditioner business, from marketing to installation.
This system channels information from around Japan to a contact center where it is centrally stored and managed. This information includes the amounts recovered at nationwide service centers and instructions for delivery of refrigerant tanks to fluorocarbon destruction subcontractors.
This part of Daikin accepts orders at bases around Japan for the dismantling of air conditioning equipment and the recovery of its refrigerants. With a uniform management system for fluorocarbon recovery and destruction, Daikin is able to consistently manage information on each fluorocarbon recovery job and on fluorocarbon recovery and destruction jobs that it subcontracts.
