Daikin Industries, Ltd. (Head Office: Osaka, President: Noriyuki Inoue) announced on July 1 that it has signed a strategic alliance agreement to develop and market fluorochemical surface modification products and surface active chemicals with OMNOVA Solutions (Head Office Ohio, USA, CEO: Kevin McMullen). The alliance will be aimed at developing new products based in PolyFoxTM, a fluoropolymer technology patented by OMNOVA, and using Daikin's specialized knowledge in the basic chemistry of fluorochemicals and materials.
PolyFoxTM technology uses a fluorinated oxetane technology to reinforce the characteristics, such as anti-stain and flow, leveling, wetting modification, of fluorochemicals. This technology has been commercialized, and its effectiveness proven in products such as MemEraseTM, a whiteboard material and wallpaper which can be written on and cleanly erased.
Under the trademark PolyFox TM, OMNOVA will soon commercialize surfactants for coating floors-polish evenly, industrial coatings and other applications.
Fluoro-surfactants have excellent flow, leveling and wetting, and superior penetration characteristics. There is an estimated world market of ¥20 billion for fluoro-surfactants, of which Japan accounts for some ¥3 billion. Their use in semiconductor production and electronics materials is growing, and this growth is projected to continue in the future.
Fast and global response to market demands will be possible as Daikin and OMNOVA will cooperate broadly on product development, production, sales, customer service, and marketing.
Daikin considers this alliance to be a strategic one because, by fusing the OMNOVA PolyFoxTM technology with Daikin's own fluorochemical technology, the companies will be able to develop environmentally friendly products in many areas including surfactants and coating additives, and will therefore lead to an overall broadening of the fluorochemical market.
