Daikin Industries, LTD. and LANXESS Deutschland GmbH, based in Leverkusen, Germany , have jointly developed the world's first water-based fluoropolymer coating material (water-based fluorinated urethane coating material), which is environmentally friendly and has superior anti-stain properties, weather resistance*1 and chemical resistance.
Organic solvent-based fluoropolymer coating materials, with good weather resistance, are used in a wide range of fields including architectural coatings; but in response to VOC regulations*2, demand for environmentally friendly water-based coatings is rising. Generally, existing water-based products have lower physical properties than solvent based materials; these properties include resistance to water and chemicals, and anti-stain properties.
In the latest joint development, Daikin's fluorine chemical technology and the dispersion technology and polyurethane know-how of LANXESS Business Unit Leather were combined to create a VOC-free water-based fluoropolymer coating material product that has equal physical and anti-stain properties compared with organic solvent-based coatings.
LANXESS, one of the global players to the leather industry, will promote the product for leather applications such as automotive (car seats) and furniture as well as special shoe upper finishes.
Backed by its experience in sales of fluoropolymer coatings, Daikin will promote the product to enter the architecture, automobile, aircraft and industrial markets.
Daikin, global leader of the fluorine industry and LANXESS concluded an agreement in February 2006 to jointly develop water-based fluorinated polyurethane in order to develop and commercialize a new material. The companies will take full advantage of their global networks to create new business areas for fluorine and urethane and to develop new products. The companies will continue to use their mutual strengths to the full, to create new business and markets.
