Daikin Industries, Ltd. and Conservation International (Headquarters: Arlington, Virginia, United States), the international NGO that plays a pioneering role in the conservation of biodiversity on a global scale and the protection of the environment, have agreed to continue their cooperation in support of a reforestation project in Indonesia. The project will be extended another three years in order to continue reforestation of degraded land and to manage the reforested areas properly.
The reforestation project began as a three-year effort in 2008 to protect the water reservoir and habitat for the precious wildlife and plants at the Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park*1 in Java Island, Indonesia, and has rejuvenated degraded land through reforestation activities. Since then, approximately 80,000 tree seedlings of indigenous species have been planted on 200 hectares of land in cooperation with the 551 local farmers and 20 national park rangers. These efforts have received positive evaluations from the Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation at the Republic of Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry for sustaining reforestation activities by making them compatible with the livelihoods of local farmers. The project has been considered as a model for expansion of similar activities to other regions of the country.
This reforestation project is tied to the Daikin "eco-point" system built into each 'Ururu Sarara (RX Series)' model manufactured since 2008. The project enables Daikin customers to participate in the protection of the global environment by selecting the energy-saving operation (comfortable eco-operation*2) in the remote controller to nurture a virtual tree in the display - which is linked to actual reforestation and conservation activities by individuals in the communities where the project work is taking place.
By sharing the company's vision for the future as well as achieving a healthy balance between comfort and energy efficiency with customers through our products, Daikin and the customers will collaborate in support of the global environment through the development of this reforestation activity.
