Agreement with Conservation International to Continue Reforestation Project in Indonesia
- Energy-saving air conditioners turning virtual trees into real ones -

Daikin Industries, Ltd. and Conservation International (Headquarters: Arlington, Virginia, United States), the international NGO that plays a pioneering role in the conservation of biodiversity on a global scale and the protection of the environment, have agreed to continue their cooperation in support of a reforestation project in Indonesia. The project will be extended another three years in order to continue reforestation of degraded land and to manage the reforested areas properly.

The reforestation project began as a three-year effort in 2008 to protect the water reservoir and habitat for the precious wildlife and plants at the Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park*1 in Java Island, Indonesia, and has rejuvenated degraded land through reforestation activities. Since then, approximately 80,000 tree seedlings of indigenous species have been planted on 200 hectares of land in cooperation with the 551 local farmers and 20 national park rangers. These efforts have received positive evaluations from the Directorate General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation at the Republic of Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry for sustaining reforestation activities by making them compatible with the livelihoods of local farmers. The project has been considered as a model for expansion of similar activities to other regions of the country.

This reforestation project is tied to the Daikin "eco-point" system built into each 'Ururu Sarara (RX Series)' model manufactured since 2008. The project enables Daikin customers to participate in the protection of the global environment by selecting the energy-saving operation (comfortable eco-operation*2) in the remote controller to nurture a virtual tree in the display - which is linked to actual reforestation and conservation activities by individuals in the communities where the project work is taking place.
By sharing the company's vision for the future as well as achieving a healthy balance between comfort and energy efficiency with customers through our products, Daikin and the customers will collaborate in support of the global environment through the development of this reforestation activity.

*1    Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, located in the central part of the Java, Indonesia, was established in 1980 as one of Indonesia's first national parks and is a prominent habitat in the world for its diverse plant and animal life. It is one of six biosphere areas in Indonesia that are currently designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
*2    Comfortable Eco-Operation is an operation where the optimum settings for temperature, humidity, and airflow can be selected automatically by simply pushing the Comfortable Eco button to balance a comfortable air conditioning environment with energy efficiency.

Reforestation Project Summary (Second Term)
[Name]   Indonesia "Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park" Reforestation Project "
[Region]   Indonesia "Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park" (located in the province of West Java)
[Time Period]   Second Term : June 2011 to May 2014 (First Term : June 2008 to May 2011)
[Details]   Customer participation and reforestation business for the local community Not only does Daikin plant a tree for each virtual tree the customer nurtures in the remote controller, the company is also aiming for sustainable forest restoration and protection by combining this with activities such as support for introducing alternative income sources in local communities and environmental education.

1. Reforestation
Reforestation is to take place over 100 hectares to create forest continuity between the 200 hectares of reforested area in the first term and a primeval forest. Reforestation will contribute not only to conservation of biodiversity but also to prevention of natural disasters, such as floods and landslides, through appropriate land use and forest conservation.
2. Agroforestry by Local Community
Capacity building programs will be implemented for producing value added products from fruits that would be harvested from fruit trees planted in the first term to be able to market them at an appropriate price. A new income source will improve sustainability of the reforestation project and ensure conservation of forest by mitigating further deforestation.
3. Educational Programs for Schools and Communities
Educational programs will be implemented to improve understanding of the importance of forests and their conservation.
4. Promotion of Importance of Forest as a Water Reservoir Supporting Life
Small power generation (Pico Hydro Systems) and safe water will be supplied to local communities, and the benefit that is brought to the forest will be displayed in a visible form.
5. Biodiversity and Socio-economic Investigations
Results of the project and associated benefits will be measured.
