LOCATION and their stories

Iriomote Island, located in the southwest of the Japanese archipelago, is covered in subtropical forests and vast mangrove swamps, and almost the entire island has been designated as a national park. Reflecting its rich natural environment and geological history, the island is home to many rare and endemic species, including the Iriomote wildcat. In 2021, Iriomote Island was designated as a World Natural Heritage site in recognition of its high biodiversity. For many years, people have lived in close harmony with nature. In recent years, however, there have been problems such as the proliferation of feral goats, which were originally domesticated but have now gone feral, in the forest areas affecting vegetation, and garbage washed ashore from the surrounding sea area threatening the growth of mangrove forests.

PROJECT overview

PROJECT overview

Daikin has concluded a trilateral agreement with the Iriomote Foundation and Taketomi Town, and has begun supporting three projects. In the “Project to Conserve Subtropical Forests,” we aim to halt deforestation by tracking the movements of feral goats and surveying the extent of damage caused by them. In the “Project to Maintain Healthy Mangrove Forests,” we will collect garbage washed ashore from mangrove forests and monitor the growth of mangroves, raising awareness of the importance of preserving tidal flat environments. In the “Project to Restore the Sea Forests,” we will work to install and maintain feeding prevention structures to conserve the endangered Enhalus acoroides, aiming to restore the sea forest.
