Nature in Shiretoko

The Shiretoko Peninsula is located on the eastern edge of Hokkaido.

The area from the middle of the peninsula to Shiretoko Cape is designated as a national park, one of Japan's largest and most well known.

From the mountain range that runs along the center of the peninsula, to the shores where ice flows reach, Shiretoko has a diversity of nature and wildlife.

For the rich ecosystems created by Shiretoko's land and sea, and a natural environment that fosters rare plant and animal life, the area was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
