Reforestation in Indonesia

We entered the third year of our reforestation project in Indonesia in July 2010. We are planting seedlings in another 50 hectares of land, and will manage these seedlings.
The project has been implemented with the participation of the local farmers, who use the project land for agriculture. First, we surveyed how and by whom land had been used, and then selected the 50 hectares of land. The selected area that is located on the slope of the mountain is threatened to landslides and to soil erosion, and therefore unsuitable for farming crops. We held numerous meetings with the local farmers to explain about the project and its importance for their lives.

The selected 50 hectare is used by 94 local farmers.
Between July and September, we established 5 farmers groups consisting of them. Each group has a leader and a field facilitator, selects the trees species to be planted through discussions, and plants and manages seedlings.

The seedlings of native tree species for the 50 hectare land have already collected by local farmers from neighboring forests. Daikin purchases these seedlings from the farmers. The amount is their additional income.

Along with local farmers and national park staffs, we also continue to monitor and manage the 150 hectares of land planted during the past two years. On August 31, we received a letter from the national park thanking us for leading the project to success. Indonesian government promotes our project as an excellent example of reforestation in other area of the country.

In June, we set up a signboard bearing the names of customers who contribute to the environment by using Daikin's air conditioners in energy saver mode. From its location at a reforestation site, the signboard keeps a protecting eye on local people who pass by for forest maintenance and farming work. We regularly patrol the area to make sure the signboard remains intact. We hope this signboard informs as many people as possible about our project that connects Japanese people to our reforestation and environmental preservation efforts in Indonesia.
