Daikin Industries, Ltd. announces that Katsuyuki Sawai, Senior Executive Officer for Daikin will participate in a side event jointly organized by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) on December 5, 2023. As part of its exhibition at the Japan Pavilion for the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) being held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from November 30 to December 12, MOEJ has organized a series of side events highlighting efforts to combat climate change. Senior Executive Officer Sawai will be speaking at the side event entitled “Higher Energy Efficient Cooling and HFC Lifecycle Management As a Key Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation” and will lecture on the environmental initiatives being taken by the air conditioning manufacturer.

As a measure to help people adapt to climate change, air conditioners are increasingly becoming essential for maintaining health and protecting lives, especially of those people living in hot climates. However, the rise in global demand for air conditioners (particularly for cooling) has further increased the urgency for mitigating the impact that air conditioners have on climate change. This year’s COP focuses attention on the role that cooling will play in climate change countermeasures, and the side event being held by the MOEJ and METI on December 5th will spotlight the subject of cooling. In the same day, UAE, the COP28 Presidency will announce the Global Cooling Pledge.

To achieve decarbonization, it will be necessary to improve the energy efficiency of air conditioners and properly manage refrigerants. At the G7 Summit in May of this year and the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting in July, energy efficiency was said to be positioned as the "first fuel" for accelerating decarbonization. Emphasis was also placed on the importance of promoting appropriate lifecycle refrigerant management.

In light of this, this side event will focus on the diverse perspectives for sustainable development in the air conditioner field and the role that air conditioners are expected to have in mitigating and adapting to climate change. Representatives from the organizers, the MOEJ and METI, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) will be on stage at this side event to discuss energy efficiency and lifecycle management of refrigerants related to climate change countermeasures. In addition to giving efforts on the themes of energy savings in air conditioners and proper management of refrigerants, Daikin will also participate in a panel discussion with other speakers.

This year marks the first time that Daikin will have an exhibit at the Japan Pavilion sponsored by MOEJ, and it will be demonstrating a high-efficiency inverter air conditioner that contributes to achieving 50% energy savings.*1 As the importance of energy conservation increases globally, IEA has indicated the need to double energy efficiency improvements around the world. To this end, the Daikin inverter technology makes immediate impact and exceptional outcomes. To contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality, the company will make active participation in COP28 to promote the benefits of high-efficiency inverter air conditioners to government officials around the world in an effort to accelerate the worldwide adoption of inverter technology.

Calculated based on demonstration experiments at Daikin. "High-efficiency inverter air conditioners" reduce power consumption by more than 50% compared to non-inverter air conditioners by accurately controlling the rotational speed of the air conditioner's compressor according to operating conditions.

Inverter Simulation Model

Inverters are frequency conversion devices that control electrical voltage, current, and frequency. Inverters precisely control the compressor motor, the heart of an air conditioner.
Compared to non-inverter models that can only perform simple ON/OFF operations, inverter conditioners can finely control motor rotation speed to reduce load. Visitors to the Daikin exhibit can experience this for themselves by feeling the differences in weight when turning two types of hand-cranked rollers.
