How Air Conditioners Cool a Room
When you turn on an air conditioner, the room starts to feel cooler. It may seem like the unit is producing cold air, but in fact it works by removing heat from the indoor air and releasing it outside. As the amount of heat in the room decreases, the temperature lowers, creating a more comfortable environment.
Moving heat to cool the air
The key to understanding how an air conditioner works is to think of it not as creating cold air, but as moving heat out of the room. The air in a room contains heat, and temperature depends on how much of it is present. As heat is removed, the air becomes cooler. In other words, cooling simply means reducing the amount of heat in the space.
Removing only the heat while keeping the air inside
An air conditioner consists of two main components: an indoor unit and an outdoor unit. The indoor and outdoor units are connected by pipes filled with a gas called refrigerant. As the refrigerant circulates through the system, it carries heat from indoors to outdoors. The indoor unit first draws in warm air from the room. It removes heat from the air and sends the cooled air back into the room, helping lower the indoor temperature. The extracted heat is then carried by the refrigerant to the outdoor unit, where it is released outside.
How refrigerant transfers heat
The refrigerant circulates through pipes connecting the indoor and outdoor units. After absorbing indoor heat, it flows to the outdoor unit, where it is compressed and becomes hotter. By the time it reaches the outdoor unit, its temperature is higher than the outside air, so heat can be released. After losing its heat, the refrigerant cools down and returns to its original state. It then flows back to the indoor unit to absorb more heat. As this cycle repeats, the room gradually becomes cooler.
