How does the air we breathe support our lives?
Air is something we rarely notice, yet it plays a vital role in sustaining life. Each day, we breathe in a surprising amount—about 20 kg for a person weighing 50 kg, more than ten times the amount of water they drink. Though invisible, the components of air, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, support our health through the roles they play in the body. Let’s take a closer look at how air quietly supports our everyday lives.
Air Components: A mixture that supports life
Air is not a single substance but a mixture of several gases. Nitrogen makes up about 78%, and oxygen about 21%, while the remaining 1% consists of argon, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other trace gases. This balance is essential for sustaining life and also plays a role in shaping the Earth’s climate.
Oxygen: Enabling the body to produce energy
Oxygen allows the body to convert nutrients from food into energy through a process called oxidation. Without it, the body cannot produce the energy needed to sustain life. The level of oxygen in the air remains relatively stable at around 21%. If it drops below this level, oxygen deficiency can occur, while excessively high levels may lead to oxygen toxicity. This balance makes the current levels well suited to human life.
Carbon Dioxide: Supporting the regulation of breathing
Carbon dioxide is often thought of as unnecessary, but it plays an important role in the body. Changes in carbon dioxide levels in the blood are detected by the brain, which automatically adjusts the speed and depth of breathing. If these levels become too high, they can negatively affect health, while levels that are too low may also disrupt normal bodily functions. Maintaining an appropriate balance is therefore essential for supporting the body’s condition.
Water Vapor: Supporting temperature regulation and the body’s natural defenses
Water vapor in the air plays an important role in regulating body temperature and supporting the body’s natural defenses. The amount of water vapor, known as humidity, affects both comfort and overall well-being. When humidity is high, sweat evaporates less easily, causing heat to build up in the body. When humidity is too low, the nose and throat can become dry, weakening the body’s ability to remove viruses and other foreign substances.
Nitrogen: How does it affect us?
Nitrogen makes up 78% of the air we breathe, but it cannot be directly absorbed from the air and must be obtained through food. In the atmosphere, nitrogen also plays a key role in maintaining balance. Since it makes up most of the air, it helps keep oxygen levels suitable for the human body.
