Plants take in CO₂ through photosynthesis, and it returns to the atmosphere through animal respiration and of organic matter by microorganisms. The oceans also absorb and release CO₂, helping regulate this cycle. In recent years, however, increased emissions from fossil fuel use have been linked to shifts in the balance of carbon in the atmosphere and are considered one of the causes of global warming.

Although nitrogen makes up about 78% of the air, most living things cannot use it in its natural form. Microorganisms in the soil help convert nitrogen into forms that plants can absorb. Plants then use this nitrogen to build proteins and DNA, moves through the food chain as plants are consumed by animals. When plants and animals die or produce waste, microorganisms break them down, returning nitrogen to the soil and eventually to the atmosphere, completing the cycle.
