Why Cleaning Your Air Conditioner Filter Helps Save Energy
If your air conditioner is not cooling the room effectively, or your electricity bill is higher than expected, a clogged filter may be the cause. The filter is closely related to airflow, and when dust builds up, it can reduce the unit's efficiency and increase energy use. By maintaining the filter regularly and using the correct cleaning methods, both comfort and energy efficiency can be maintained.
Why Does Cleaning the Filter Help Reduce Electricity Costs?
The filter is located at the air intake of the air conditioner and captures dust before it enters the unit. As dust accumulates, airflow becomes restricted, making it harder for the air conditioner to draw in air efficiently. To maintain the same level of performance, the unit must use more energy, which can lead to higher electricity costs. According to Daikin estimates, an air conditioner with a filter that has not been cleaned for a year may consume about 25% more electricity than one with a clean filter. This is why regular filter cleaning is one of the most effective ways to improve energy efficiency and reduce electricity costs.
How Often and How to Clean the Filter
During periods of daily use, cleaning the filter about once every two weeks is generally recommended. The steps below show how to remove and clean the filter using a Daikin air conditioner as an example.

- Do not use the following, as they may cause deformation, discoloration, or damage:
- Water hotter than 40℃
- Volatile solvents such as benzine or thinner
- Hard sponges or other rough cleaning materials

Open the front panel and remove the filter.

Gently remove dust from the surface using a vacuum cleaner.

If the filter is heavily soiled, wash it in water with a small amount of mild liquid detergent, using a soft cloth. Rinse thoroughly, shake off excess water, and allow it to dry completely in the shade before reinstalling it.
Aluminum Fins: An important checkpoint
Behind the filter are thin metal plates called aluminum fins. These fins play a key role in transferring heat from the air. When dust builds up on them, airflow is restricted, reducing the unit`s cooling efficiency. As a result, the room may take longer to reach the set temperature, causing the air conditioner to run longer and consume more electricity. Because the fins are located deep inside the unit, they cannot be cleaned through regular filter maintenance alone. If they become heavily soiled, it is recommended to have them cleaned by a qualified service technician.
