Ways to Stay Cool Without Lowering the Temperature Setting
Do you lower the temperature setting every time you feel hot? In some situations, there are more effective ways to improve comfort than lowering the temperature setting, while also helping reduce additional energy consumption. Small adjustments—such as changing the airflow, air direction, or using a fan—can make a noticeable difference in how cool a room feels.
What Is “Perceived Temperature”? Understanding Why We Feel Cooler
Perceived temperature refers not to the actual room temperature shown on a thermometer, but to how warm or cool it feels to the body. Even at the same room temperature, when air flows directly over your skin, it removes heat and moisture, making you feel cooler than the actual temperature would suggest. Lowering the room temperature requires a significant amount of energy, whereas increasing airflow has a much smaller impact on electricity use. For this reason, when you feel hot, increasing the fan speed is often more energy-efficient than lowering the temperature setting.
Adjustments That Improve Comfort Without Changing the Temperature Setting
If you feel hot, try increasing the fan speed before lowering the temperature setting. It is also generally recommended to direct airflow upward or straight ahead. Cool air naturally settles near the floor. When airflow is directed downward, the lower part of the room becomes too cold while warmer air remains near the ceiling. This uneven temperature distribution can make it harder for the air conditioner to operate efficiently, leading to unnecessary energy use. Directing airflow upward or straight ahead allows cooler air to circulate more evenly throughout the room, helping reduce temperature differences.
How to Bring Cool Air to Every Corner of the Room
Because cool air is heavier than warm air, it naturally settles near the floor. As a result, it may not easily reach areas farther from the air conditioner, such as particularly in larger or more complex spaces. In these situations, using a fan alongside the air conditioner can help. Position the fan so that it catches the airflow from the air conditioner and directs it toward the area you want to cool. This helps distribute cool air more effectively while using less energy than lowering the temperature setting. If you find direct drafts uncomfortable—such as when sleeping—you can point the fan toward a wall or ceiling to circulate the air more gently.
To save energy, optimize your airflow instead of Lowering the Temperature setting
- Airflow changes how cool you feel—when air blows directly over your skin, it removes heat and moisture, making it feel cooler even without lowering the actual room temperature.
- When you feel hot, try increasing the fan speed and directing the airflow upward or straight ahead before lowering the temperature setting.
- Using a fan together with your air conditioner helps distribute cool air more evenly throughout the room.
