High-efficiency inverter air conditioners and technical-skills training underscore commitment to sustainable growth of Africa’s cooling industry
OSAKA, Japan, August 7, 2025 — Daikin Industries, Ltd. today announced that it will exhibit at the TICAD Business Expo & Conference, a thematic event of the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), to be held 20–22 August 2025 at Pacifico Yokohama, Japan. Daikin’s booth will showcase high efficiency inverter air conditioners to contribute to reducing the challenges of expanding air-conditioning in Africa, as well as initiatives for local human-resource development.
Africa extends over a wide range of climates, from hot and humid rainforests to scorching deserts. As global warming drives even higher temperatures, reliable cooling is increasingly critical to ensuring safe, comfortable living environments. Air conditioning not only protects health but also improves working conditions and boosts productivity. While economic growth and urbanization are poised to accelerate air conditioner adoption, the limited capacity of local power grids and the risk of higher greenhouse gas emissions from increased electricity demand remain major concerns.
To address these issues and expand access to cooling, Daikin is promoting high efficiency inverter air conditioners across the continent. By precisely controlling compressor speed, inverters can cut power consumption by about 50 percent compared with non-inverter models. Daikin has partnered with Nigerian research institutions to conduct demonstrations that verify these savings and to help develop local energy efficiency standards.
Market growth also depends on skilled technicians. Daikin collaborates with vocational training schools in Africa to deliver hands-on programs that build installation and maintenance capabilities, by nurturing talent that will support sustainable industry development.
During the TICAD Business Expo & Conference, the company will present its African business initiatives and high efficiency inverter air conditioners, together with an interactive station where visitors can try copper-pipe flaring, an essential installation and repair skill. Through this exhibition, Daikin aims to underscore to African government and business leaders the importance of energy efficient cooling and technical training, contributing to the sustainable growth of the region’s air conditioning sector.
The Japan Fair zone of the TICAD Business Expo & Conference will bring together 195 Japanese companies and organizations to present their products, technologies, and services to African heads of state, cabinet ministers, and business leaders visiting Japan for TICAD9.

Daikin, whose core business is HVAC&R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration), currently operates in more than 170 countries and regions worldwide—and in over 40 African nations. The company has established local subsidiaries in South Africa and other key markets, as well as an office in Kenya. Across the remainder of the continent, Daikin supplies products and services through an extensive distributor network. In Nigeria and Algeria, the company has also begun limited local production, importing air-conditioner components from India and performing final, light-assembly processes on site.
In addition, Daikin and WASSHA Inc., a start-up company from the University of Tokyo, that supplies electricity services to off-grid communities, have jointly founded Baridi Baridi Inc. The new venture offers a usage-based subscription model that charges customers according to actual air-conditioner usage. By reducing the upfront costs of equipment purchase and installation, the scheme makes cooling more accessible to local households and businesses.
Through the supply of high efficiency air conditioners that use advanced, environmentally conscious refrigerants, Daikin aims to accelerate the spread of cooling while supporting the creation of a more sustainable society across Africa.
